URUMQI: Calm returned on Sunday to China's riot-hit Urumqi where 184 people died in the bloody violence a week ago, though the official tally of dead could rise, a regional official indicated.

On Sunday, July 5th at around 9:30pm Beijing time, a riot began which has crippled Urumqi, the capital of China's Xinjiang province. Many Uyghurs have taken to the streets, overturning cars and smashing windows.

"According to informed sources in Henan, there was a large-scale student riot late night on June 15th at the Shengda Institute of Business Management of the Zhengzhou University located in Xinzheng city.
At its worst, almost 10,000 people were rioting. The students destroyed the university facilities and then marched onto the streets to vandalize street lamps and telephone booths, and they looted banks, supermarkets and electronic stores.
