Chinese artist Ai Weiwei to work from Berlin – Arts & Entertainment
www.thelocal.de — The artist, architect and activist has been among the sharpest critics of China's regime, making him a target for authorities. Chinese police beat him so severely in 2009 that he had emergency brain surgery to relieve a haematoma on the side of his skull. Now preparations are underway for a “partial move” with his team to the German capital’s Schöneweide district, where he has purchased a studio.

Just a couple of quotes from the man himself, which flesh this story out a bit. Left out of the thelocal.de article:
- “I want to be in Europe as little as possible, but I would have no other choice if my life or my existence were to be somehow threatened.”
- “It’s true that the possibilities for artistic expression are very small in China, but I’m not planning to emigrate to Germany. China is the place I’m most familiar with, and, in the end, I’m a Chinese citizen. I will do my best to improve the working conditions there.”
