The narrative is something of a reflection of Fei’s reality - artistic beauty tries to survive in social and political turbulence. In the film, Confucius travels across China during a time of warfare to spread his doctrines of virtue and philosophic wisdom. During shooting, the Japanese army was occupying Shanghai and the Pacific War (1941-45) was about to start.
