Brad Luo recently did some very interesting posts about a trademark case in the Hangzhou Intermediate People’s Court (here and here), where the court awarded 20 million yuan in damages… in what appears to be lost profits. So I take back what I said, that you can never expect lost profits in Chinese courts. I still believe they are rare.

Continuing my vow to catch up on things I've been meaning to review - here is the Lost Laowai official review of the (relatively) new ActiveChinese.com - a site that uses a crapload of cool flash to teacha da 汉语.

The headline that caught my eye fastest yesterday was that the Heparin contaminant was actually identified. And you can be sure that if deadly toothpaste and pet food warrant a criminal case, this Heparin thing will too. Senator Kennedy is on the record about it.

For the Chinese businesses looking for attorneys: don’t look for the cheapest rates and then demand discounts. Trust me, you won’t be happy with those services and those attorneys are not going to be happy with you. Like many things in life, YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR.

It feels so un-American to admit that everyone was cheating. It is ironic that often a chief complaint I hear about Chinese businesses and networking in China is that everyone cheats. But the more I understand business in China and America, I want to say this: this is not a Chinese problem. This is a problem for everyone.

Beijing Newspeak comments on a recent Xinhua article in which a teacher in Gansu was convicted of raping 18 grade 3 and 4 students. The young journalist that did the reporting was not eager to find out more details to expose the case because "it would not be good for China’s image."
