China’s Internet search giant was the subject to two critical reports by state-controlled China Central Television over the weekend that questioned its paid-link business and whether advertisers influenced the company’s search results. The reports sent Baidu’s shares sharply lower, and some analysts have cut their price forecasts.

The story of how a once obscure search engine has come to be the most-visited site in China. This site supposedly trounces Google and Yahoo in the Middle Kingdom. The kicker, though, is that it mixes ads into your search results and lets the censors do what they please. Very interesting.

China's President Hu Jintao announced in January plans to "purify" the Internet. Today, one of China's most prominent government censors said that the ruling Communist Party will introduce new laws to crack down on blogs, podcasts, and internet video.

Baidu issues full statement denying censoring negative search results related to Sanlu and the melamine milk powder incident. Chinese netizens remain skeptical.

Google launched a local Chinese book search. Interestingly enough, while this service doesn’t make its censorship explicit, it’s restricted to find less Chinese books than Google’s other localized book searches because it omits Chinese books published outside of China mainland – this is disclosed at the end of search results in italics, reading “These results only include works from Mainland China.”*
