At least 60 people—officials, police, and protesters—were injured in the riots, according to a statement on the government Web site of Longnan city, where the unrest occurred. The protest initially began Monday with just a small group of people complaining about the demolition of their homes to make way for a new road in Longnan in Gansu province.

A young girl is forced into the men's restroom at a restaurant in Shenzhen, China by 58-year-old government official, who later arrogantly dares people to do something about it. Police say there is no evidence, but witnesses say he already confessed in the restaurant.

Chinese authorities in the northwestern Xinjiang region are forcing tens of thousands of ethnic Uyghurs into producing almonds for the county government without pay, local residents and one official say.

The labor recruiting drive began in Yarkand county near Kashgar on March 6, and it requires every Uyghur household to send one person and a donkey cart to help in a massive expansion of the region’s traditional almond industry.

In the Hechi (河池) city of Guangxi province, there is an autonomous county populated by Ba Ma Yao (巴馬瑤) ethnic group. The county now boasts the highest longevity rate in the world – every 100,000 residents, 31.7 are 100 years old or older...

The Chinese government is imprisoning and giving electric shocks to people it thinks have become addicted to the Internet.

Alarmed by a survey that found that nearly 14 percent of teens in China are vulnerable to becoming addicted to the Internet, the Chinese government has launched a nationwide campaign to stamp out what the Communist Youth League calls "a grave social problem" that threatens the nation.

The LA Times documents the rising tide of unrest in the Middle Kingdom. According to the story, "there were 39,000 cases of 'public order disruptions' in the first half of the year.
"The Ministry of Public Security said that represented a 2.5% decrease in the number of protests from the same period in 2005, though it offered no explanation of how it had come up with the figures."

The Chinese government has realized that the internet can not only work against them, but in favor of them too. The BBC, which was responsible for many of the so called lies, was suddenly unblocked in the midst of chaos so that everyone in China could see how and what they reported.

The Chinese government has abruptly and unexpectedly linked the protests in Xinjiang of a few weeks ago to the Central Asian Islamic political organization, Hizb ut-Tahrir. TND takes a look at this new development.
