Rebecca MacKinnon has a great post (with interesting follow-up comments) on exactly what Yahoo knew, didn't know and claimed they didn't know about their part in sending Chinese journalist Shi Tao to jail for 10 years.

The story of how a once obscure search engine has come to be the most-visited site in China. This site supposedly trounces Google and Yahoo in the Middle Kingdom. The kicker, though, is that it mixes ads into your search results and lets the censors do what they please. Very interesting.

Google continues to lose ground to China's own home grown number one search engine, Baidu.com.

Still, Google Inc. has no plans on doing the eBay Inc. or Yahoo! Inc thing, playing second fiddle to a Chinese partner.

BEIJING -- Yahoo Inc., under fire from civil-rights groups for its indirect role in human rights abuses in China, is answering critics by setting up a fund to give victims of government censorship legal and other assistance.

The webco has been charged with complicity in the jailing and torture of Chinese dissidents, and this week was criticized because Yahoo China, in which Yahoo Inc. has a stake, ran a wanted list of rioters involved in violent protests in Lhasa, Tibet.

Early one Sunday morning in 2002, a phone rings in Yu Ling's Beijing duplex. She's cleaning upstairs; her son is asleep, while downstairs, her husband, Wang Xiaoning, is on the computer. Wang writes about politics, anonymously e-mailing his online e-journals to a group of Yahoo users. He's been having problems with his Yahoo service recently. He thinks it's a technical issue. This is the day he learns he's wrong.

"The plaintiffs include Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group, and they are suing Alibaba, which runs Yahoo China, for a total of RMB5.5 million for their combined economic losses," says China CRS. "They are also asking Alibaba to stop having Yahoo China infringe on their copyrights."

The Hao Hao Report has been added to the latest version of the excellent WordPress plugin - Sociable. The plugin allows blog owners to easily add a collection of icons to their posts making the addition of their articles to various social bookmarking sites (such as this) a breeze.
