Australia will almost surely become the most China-friendly country in the West with Kevin Rudd becomes the next Australian prime minister. How would that affect Canada-China trade?

This is from the article. I think it focuses too much on Canada's government, and underestimates Chinese pragmatism. When Chinese and Western governments quarrel about human rights or ipr issues, sales representatives from the respective Western country may see some immediate opportunities shelved by the Chinese side, or going to a competitor from another country. But in the longer run, a good price coming along with good quality, will count most. Not even the quarrels between Britain and China concerning Hong Kong, during the 1990s, did real harm to trade between the two countries. And that quarrel was certainly one of the biggest in recent decades.
