Rumors spreading that China's central bank chief has defectedChina News

www.stratfor.comRumors have circulated in China that People’s Bank of China (PBC) Gov. Zhou Xiaochuan may have left the country. The rumors appear to have started following reports on Aug. 28 which cited Ming Pao, a Hong Kong-based news agency, saying that because of an approximately $430 billion loss on U.S. Treasury bonds, the Chinese government may punish some individuals within the PBC, including Zhou. Although Ming Pao on Aug. 30 published a report on its website indicating that the prior report was fabricated by a mainland news site that had attributed the false information to Ming Pao, rumors of Zhou’s defection have spread around China intensively, and Zhou’s name has been blocked from Internet search engines in China.

You know what they say about rumors: They're true if they're about Osama Bin Ladin.

I think these rumors have been shown to be false. Right?

I thought this story would bury itself, until I saw it on the front page.

Voted down once it appears on the front page because we all know it's not true.

Yes, Heiney. It turned out to be a rumour only. I should have changed the title accordingly then. Well..my mistake. Not a worthy story for the frontpage indeed. Sorry for that.

Nevertheless, the interesting question is: How can such a (big fat) rumour ever start to spread around in the first place? Power struggles within the CCP for the coming leadership transition in 2012? Sensation hungry reporters?

Even Forbes ate it, but updated it later on:
