Chinese police have detained 10 people in connection with the collapse of an underground railway tunnel being built for next year's Olympic Games in Beijing.

Six workers were reported to have been killed when the tunnel caved in last Wednesday.

State media has reported that the construction firm waited at least eight hours before reporting the accident to the authorities.

It is claimed that the company mounted an elaborate cover-up and tried to rescue the trapped workers on its own.

CBC reports on a bridge in Hunan that collapsed before construction was finished. Workers were removing scaffolding when the bridge went down.
