Only one child orphaned in China’s devastating earthquake this year has won adoption so far. The process of finding new homes for 88 children whose parents have been confirmed dead or who have no relatives able to care for them has been hampered by bureaucratic red tape and by age-old prejudices against the disabled.

In Sichuan China, a doctor preformed an X-ray on a 90 year-old woman and found that she was carrying a dead fetus for 58 years.

The old lady named Wong, lives in Qing Sheng Province. In February this year, she hurt her back while she was trying to carry a bucket of water. The family took her to the hospital 2 months later for an X-ray. That’s when the doctors found out that there was a dead fetus in her uterus, though it was severely distorted.

My mother had always wanted a girl, so even as I grew inside her womb she hoped that I would come out female. When she finally gave birth to me and realized I was a boy she decided to raise me as a girl anyway by dressing me in female clothes. Then, when I turned 2, my parents divorced and the judge gave my mother custody of my brother and sent me to live with my father.

To ease and comfort the hearts of those prisoners whose families suffered big losses during the earthquake, the Sichuan Bureau of Prison Administration has initiated a campaign that allows prisoners to temporarily return to their hometowns to mourn their loved ones.

So I waited. I waited for the investigation. I waited for parents to be told that someone along the line had messed up. Maybe it was corruption or maybe it was just error in judgment but I waited for the government I had learned to trust, the government that had given me hope that there was something better than anarchy would step forward and say "here is the evidence, and here are our findings and here is the reason why an entire generation of children in Sichuan are gone."
