I would agree that a good offense is always better than a good defense. And also feel that there is no more useless phrase in the Chinglish dictionary than "China's internal affairs are China's business only". It's just not the world we live in - both inside and outside China - as China does loads of internal affair meddling.
My only caution would be to say that a straight up "you're a hypocrite - look at your own history!" will tend to just throw the other side into a defensive-offense. An attack to reclaim ground, but which doesn't add to the dialog at all.
Better is to assume the attacker is likely just ignorant of the strides the country has made in all of these areas. How many millions of people were pulled out of poverty by this "repressive regime", how much personal freedom has changed in the last decade. Also better to show a bit of humility and acceptance over the country's failings, and avoid being combative. A thick skin goes a long way.

First, my apologies on that--I evidently had not resolved all the upgrade issues from WP 2.3 to 2.5. Comments should now work, thank you so much for pointing out that they were closed! (Probably explains the lack of spam lately, lol).
I should have been more specific and noted to not specifically call them a hypocrite, but rather show them that as this will create more problems rather than solve them. You are right in that it is better to get an understanding of their level of ignorance through asking questions on what they know.
