On Soft Power – China Rants

asiasentinel.com — The term "soft power" is being frequently used in the Chinese media these days. I can't help but wonder whether the term and its underlying meaning is fully understood by the authorities, or whether they have any clue as to why "Avatar" can beat "Confucius" in the hearts and minds of the Chinese audience. Without a thorough understanding of what values are commonly shared by Chinese citizens and the world at large, and what part of the Chinese culture is of greatest interest to the non-Chinese audience, any tactics they use in the promotion of China's soft power would be futile.
