Tibet Is No Shangri-La and the Dalai Lama is Not What you Think.China Rants

www.foreignpolicy.comHow much do Westerners really know about the Dalai Lama? His advocacy of an ethos of compassion and environmental protection are popular among his largely left-leaning Western admirers, while his more socially conservative views tend to be either unknown, or selectively ignored. As for Tibet itself, it's no Shangri-la.

The title of the article is misleading, the premise is a strawman and as the reader's comments note, the author makes contradictory points. No one claims Tibet is Shangri-La (except Chinese tourism promotions). What does Buddhisms viewpoint on homosexuality have to do with it? I'm surprised Foreign Policy would print such poor journalism.

Because these people embrace both the Dalai Lama, Buddhism, and Tibet, often without knowing what they are. They like to shout slogans without knowing what the people or land stand for. I would be willing to bet almost half of "Free Tibet" protesters in the West could not even point it out on a map.

They are a religious and spiritual movement fighting to survive. The geographic awareness of protestors has nothing to do with their goal of political and religious freedom and it's a petty and narrow-minded platform to attack them on.

Voted down.

No, it is true about these protesters. Many just doing it because it is popular, but not knowing the facts about the situation at all. Both sides have serious wrongs, but you will find very few people who know this, nd if one dares to try to educate some of these ignorant automatons, one only gets attacked. Knowledge is power.

There are millions of protestors of all backgrounds, races, and ideologies. Balling them up and making broad statements about "them" is ignorant.

You could be right about a lot of pro-Tibet folks but their ignorance about Tibet doesn't even begin to compare with what I experienced in China as the average Chinese person's ignorance about Tibet and the Dalai Lama. But I can't blame them too much because the CCP's media has misinformed them on a daily basis for years.

I'll take the DL over the Chinese leadership any day.

I would rather not be a serf under any human being, regardless of their intentions and political, religious, or personal virtues.

How many Tibetans do you find clamoring for more Chinese control of their country? Reports from third parties as well as from the Tibetans indicate that it is hard to find any that welcome the Chinese. If they were so unhappy with their "serfdom" would this be the case?
