A geeky way to explain ways to get around the firewall

Researchers at the University of Cambridge have done some analysis on how the PRC?s Great Firewall (GFW) handles the ?blocking? or interruption of web page loading midstream when it detects sensitive keywords related to the day after June 3 and certain religious groups. What they discovered is quite surprising, because it indicates that the mechanism is simple, clever, but at the same time, quite straighforward to circumvent. Ways around the Great Firewall from The Weifang Radish

This is a robust and powerful way to ensure you don't have to worry about the Great Firewall of China ever again. And yeah, it requires a little bit of nous. I haven't seen a how-to article like this around, so thought I would share.

I happened upon a podcast interview over at Thomas Crampton’s blog of Duncan Hewitt, veteran China correspondent and best-selling author of Getting Rich First, who thinks that money and angry people will play a growing role in the battle against China’s Great Firewall. Though I agree with his commentary, I think the biggest thing he neglects to mention is how technology could really change the outcome of Chinese Internet censorship (USBs are already a favorite in Cuba to spread information).

The Great Firewall censors content at three levels. Nine Internet Access Providers supply Internet to China–and each IAP is connected to a foreign Internet source. Each IAP is connected to thousands of Internet Service Providers, which sell internet to Chinese users. The first level of The Great Firewall’s censorship occurs at the IAP level. IAP administrators enter all URLs and keywords deemed to provide ‘unsuitable’ content. ISPs are required to have software to back up the IAP-level censorship.

China's President Hu Jintao announced in January plans to "purify" the Internet. Today, one of China's most prominent government censors said that the ruling Communist Party will introduce new laws to crack down on blogs, podcasts, and internet video.
