Niko Bellic of GTA IV Joins the Chengguan – General

Enough with the story that chengguan officers beat street hawkers, but it seems non-stop!

May 21, a street peddler got into a fight with chengguan officers on the Taoyuan road, Luohu District, Shenzhen.

Observing the curious relationship between the street vendors and the chéngguǎn at the street market near our apartment provides some interesting insight into Chinese culture.

Recently, on a street of Kunming City (昆明市) a man, who locked himself up in a wooden instrument for prisoners in the ancient time and attached 100 Yuan bank notes all over her body, staged a stunning performance art to his audience. But he confronted the notorious officers of chengguan.

At approximately 10pm, April 26, notorious officers of Chengguan (城管, City Urban Administrative and Law Enforcement Bureau) got in a fight with several young men when they were removing vendors and hawkers on the north road of the bus station, Changsha city (长沙). The incident drew hundreds of passers by to watch and get involved.

For those of you reading this outside of China, it’s important to understand that China has probably close to a dozen different kinds of police. There are traffic police, railway police, bus police and countless others.

Chengguan, or China’s city management and law enforcement personnel, are notorious in China for often brutally and inhumanely treating street vendors and tramps, sometimes by beating them and other times by destroying their businesses, and driving them away. Chinese people in chorus detests the powerful and sympathize with the bullied and the weak.

Steven (of LLW and Sinobytes renown) sent me an e-mail yesterday that has been make its way from Chinese inbox to Chinese inbox in an expedient fashion. I thought it was hilarious, and a some what rare opportunity to get a peek at the Chinese taking the piss at their own expense.
