Western Style Democracy Won't Take Root in China – General
www.nytimes.com — A Chinese legislative official has said that China will not adopt Western-style democracy, marking a rare instance in which a member of the government here openly rejects Western-style liberal political reforms.

But this is hardly 100% yet -- or this is just the calm before the storm...it wouldn't have been published in the first place if they weren't intending on doing it?
Totally - officials clearly don't want that, but they only have so much control in the way things actually unfold. So it seems, at least!
A "Western" style democracy in China? That can never work and will never happen!!! Not what we have. The mind set and conditions are not made for that. And they know it themselves. Something close to it would be a success already...if it ever comes to that.
gtowna: I was on the road for a long time and just came back. I will reply to your message today.
Whenever you've got some time. No pressure.
If China prospers and grows rich, will its citizens demand any semblance of a democratic process?
Would the citizens know what a democratic process really looks like? It's like buying a house...you can visualize what it will look like all you want, but it's a whole different ball game once you actually move in.
Maybe they saw that episode of The Simpsons where Homer steps into a voting booth, votes for Obama, and the touch screen voting machine audibly registers a vote for McCain.
Wait.
Hey Gang,
What I'm basically looking for is a slightly different slant on the obvious screed:
"The Chinese people -- and their anointed representatives, the Glorious Victorious CPC -- are hardly equipped to handle the rigors of open, objective, critical Western-style democracy. Given China's recent warring past, its more dastardly ancient past, and the resultant chaos that leaders can indeed envision from a breakdown in the Chinese societal order currently brought to you by the sterling stewardship of the Chinese Communist Party, it is vital that the Reds remain in power to ensure the continued economic thriving and well-being of the nation."
I want some more meat, not more of the same mince.
Is this *really* the only argument the academics can muster? Can someone suggest something different?
Anyone?!
In terms of politics, I wouldn't say they're really academics - more like products of an authoritarian ideology that are merely marching in formation. When I read things like "The Glorious Victorious CPC" I don't know whether to laugh or cry.
But you didn't respond to the bit about democracy...I'm looking for a different explanation to the one I was given...
