Very good article, Chengduliving. I also have my preferences and practically, I order the same when I go alone to a restaurant. Because i know it, and know that I like it...that is normal isn't it? Personally, I cannot get past "The Routine" -level. Yes I "can", when i am forced to eat scorpions and disgusting stinky tofu with local friends. Damn, I need great Spanish food..trust me Spain has a great cuisine. And the germans too, and not to mention the Italians (*love it*)! Perhaps it is time to get out for a time... :-)

Ordering what you know and love is completely normal - everyone does that. The post was authored with the intention of promoting experimentation. Stepping outside your comfort zone every so often, since the gamut of experience available to you in China is so incredibly wide!

It doesn't just apply to Chinese food either - all food cultures have their own oddities which appear alien or even threatening to outsiders. Appearances can be deceiving, though.
