Conversation with Colin Chinnery - deputy director of the Ullens Centre for Contemporary Art, Beijing's first non-profit arts institution - on the ravages of the Chinese art market, diplomatic censorship, and ways in which China's cultural scene is freer than in the west.

Richard gives his detailed review of LiJia Zhang's book - Socialism Is Great, the story of a woman who was sent to work in a missile factory in post-Cultural Revolution China. Despite the hardships of the work, Zhang taught herself English and rebelled against the unfair practices of the factory. Not only does she pull herself out of the factory - but she goes on to be a writer and commentator on BBC and NPR. As Richard puts it - it trumps "just about every conceivable Cinderella story."

But I never expected that he can be so bad. He can be so ignorant of history that in a radio program, he cited China’s Cultural Revolution as an extreme case of democracy, while Cultural Revolution is in fact a good example of how dictatorship can destroy a whole country.

I am sure that this confusion started with the insistence on woofing like a dog in an attempt to simply the otherwise long moniker when referring to the entity in conversation.
But then again, referring to it as a WaFOO EE just doesn’t sound as good.
