Aside from the internet itself, I’ve found that the most useful single object in my Chinese study over the last 18 months has been an iPod touch. In the App Store there are thousands of language related applications available for download, many of them free – I’m talking dictionaries, translators, flash card viewers, books of idioms, and much more. Whether you’re studying Chinese in school or on your own these are necessary tools that are fundamental to learning the language and the iPhone makes them more convenient than ever.
