China's yellow pavers have come into focus during the Paralympics.

2008 coined the Chinese internet meme: 很黄，很暴力 (”very yellow, very violent”). Despite roundly being used in the most humorous of situations, few things truly exemplify the dark side of this meme more than two videos that have spread across the Chinese-language internet this year.

I greatly respect and admire Chinese culture. I may not always agree with the politics or the attitudes that I encounter (in fact I often do not) but I am grateful for the opportunity to live here and immerse myself in the culture. I was thinking about my favorite aspects of Chinese culture.

Here a few of my thoughts; feel free to add more.

Tibet Daily, a leading newspaper in the Tibet Autonomous Region, southwest China, has condemned the Dalai Lama and his supporters for their continued support of secession by violent means while waving the banner of "peace".

This is not a critique necessarily on Chinese culture. It is, however, a warning that the global economy–and its attendant culture–does threaten any country’s native culture. China is not exempted from this either.

Is China a developed, developing, or Third World country? The answer: all three at once. Also: everyone worries about culture shock- but what about reverse culture shock? The perils of returning home after a long stay abroad.

An interesting post on Danwei regarding Google's translation engine making some pretty serious goofs in English/Chinese translation. This all just furthers my view that online translation continues to suck more than Jenna Jameson working overtime.

Of China's more than 120 million Internet users, 43 percent are using online message boards, 76 million are using online video sharing sites and 24 percent are using blogs. Social media is alive and well in China, says CIC CEO Sam Flemming. CIC is the leading Internet word-of-mouth consulting firm in China. But is it a culture one where listening is promoted, and relationships are encouraged? How do companies "do" social media in China? What works best for American companies trying to use social media in China?

ESWN gives translation of an article in China's Liberation Daily which reports the account of Jin Jing, a medal-winning member of the Chinese national wheelchair fencing team and carrier of the Olympic torch in Paris. The article raises the point that bad PR is not pointing to the CPC, but to the protesters.
