13 weeks 5 days 18 hours 13 min agoI like some of China Smack's posts, but I think sometimes I just don't want to know what is happening in China's weird internet community.

12 weeks 4 days 9 hours 14 min agoThough I would love for every member of Hao Hao Report to submit a variety of posts from a variety of sources - I realized long ago it's just not going to happen. Which is why it is in the guidelines that self-posting is fine as long as it's not "selly" and not multiple consecutive submissions from one source. As I say in the FAQ, you wouldn't be writing it if you didn't think it was good.
Everyone, of course, is free to vote as they please - but my only suggestion is to vote on the story, or on the value of the story - as that's what it's about. We're too small a community to be about punishing and rewarding, we should just be about spreadin' the love yo. :-)

12 weeks 3 days 4 hours 1 min ago...maybe getting Hao'd down all the time will convince these self-promoters to submit stories other than their own site's entries and become better HHR community members?

12 weeks 2 days 23 hours 39 min ago"and not multiple consecutive submissions from one source." so... 10+ multiple consecutive submissions from one source is not multiple consecutive submissions from one source? Because that's only what's been submitted.
To Recap:
Are multiple postings in a row from a single source site considered abuse/spam?
Yes.
Hrm... so much for that rule.

12 weeks 2 days 13 hours 42 min ago@nstanosheck: Maybe, or maybe not. Personally, I'd rather have them posting something rather than nothing - as long as it's China-related and not about selling a product, to me it's not spam and doesn't deserve to be "punished" - whether they choose to contribute over and above that is their choice and not something I feel our small community should be bullying anyone into.
@demerzel: By "consecutive" and "in a row" I mean without anyone's other postings in between. So if someone comes to HHR and posts 5 postings in a row from their site - that's abuse and I'll delete them. If they come today and post a new article they wrote and then two days from now, after a number of other postings have been submitted, and post another - that's not abuse. Maybe I need to make the language of the guidelines less ambiguous?
Here's the thing guys - getting people to contribute in any form (self-serving or not) is a challenge that I face with this site. I'm more than happy to consider any ideas you guys have to improve the functionality and activity of the site, but if things get unfriendly because of a feature, I'll just kill it - there's just no sense in having hurt feelings in a small community like this.

12 weeks 2 days 8 hours 6 min agoMaybe we should remove the ability to see who Hao'd down the stories so people do not get hurt and retaaliate on other HaoHao'rs? That would help build community in a positive manner if people could only see whop Hao's up the stories, perhaps?

12 weeks 2 days 7 hours 47 min agoI rather enjoy seeing who has been downing my stories. I find it interesting that Nik and demerzel can take such a stand against China Smack for self-promotion when both of their comments are followed by links to their own websites. Maybe their comments should be regarded as spam.

12 weeks 2 days 5 hours 39 min agoWell honestly, I just do not care for much of what ChinaSMACK submits, but I think it is not a community building exercise to only submit stories from your site, and every story from your own site at that. I have occasionally submitted stories from my sites, but more often than not, I HaoHao good stories about China that I have found elsewhere.
ChinaSMACK is not the only one who does that shameless self-promotion by submitting every story they post on their blog either. And that behaviour can easily be seen as spammy by the community and I think it should be frowned upon. And even though it is spammy, I occasionally like a ChinaSMACK story and will HaoHao it up.
But having links in your signature is just a traditional part of the Internet for over 10 years, so I do not see how that should be seen as spam.

12 weeks 2 days 3 hours 53 min ago@Ryan: It is your site and how you decide to deal with the issue is your choice in the end. I do believe that only submitting your own stuff is spam and not a benefit to the a social community. No one likes a leech really. I personally like how reddit uses their system to have nofollow for a submitted link and then becomes a 'dofollow' when someone else gives it a thumbs up. There is also the bittorrent system where you have to have a positive ratio of 'uploads' vs. 'downloads' (ie: are you putting more into the community than you are taking away)--easily could set up a system for that I believe.
@zhangbohan: See nstanosheck for the first response. I also have no qualms about setting up a nofollow on my signature below, it will not change how I display information about myself and my site. If someone wants to know more about me and my comments, they can quickly go to my site. Ryan could also make signatures forbidden for having links as well (thereby I would just type out my link for people to learn more about me). Regardless, I am not spamming the system with new links from the same site everyday.
