Chinese President Hu Jintao warns of cultural warfare from West
telegraph.co.uk -
Mr Hu called on the 80 million-plus Party members to fight "hostile international powers" and meet the "cultural demands" of the people.
"Hostile international powers are strengthening their efforts to Westernise and divide us," Mr Hu wrote in the latest edition of Communist Party's magazine, Seeking the Truth.

what is this about?
it's about China responding to the recent and growing pressure from abroad and from within to actually create and sustain a real culture, instead of dialectic materialism, Important Theories of Mao, Deng and Marx, atheism, nationalism and conformity.
Hu sees the pressure and responds with ... a hammer. To be Chinese, for him, is to obey and swallow the culture as the Party sees it. This means more incarcerations, more beatings ...
but we always have the vaunted "gray area" in which to act and think. right?
Really, if a leader has to call on his people to stop being influenced by new ideas it's sad - and a lost cause.
I think Hu might be looking for his historic footnote. He's halfway out the door now anyway.
