Good day to y'all,
Just want to draw attention to a new feature at Hao Hao Report you may have noticed rolling out over the last day or so -- the HHR Bar.
Man do I wish that was my new beach-side bevvy dispensary. But what it lacks in alcohol and tanned bodies, it makes up for with its slick little interface. See here for an example.
Basically, I was looking for a way to maintain a bit of "on Hao Hao"-ishness to the links that lead out from here. Fortunately the trail has been blazed by other great sites that primarily revolve around link sharing of some sort, and so I just had to look around and see what they did.
So, what does this mean? Well, it means now when you click the title of a submitted story, you will be taken (in a new tab/window) to that site -- with one difference, the site will feature a (hopefully) non-intrusive toolbar at the top of the page that allows you to quickly return to the story's page on HHR, see how many votes it has, see how many comments it has, and a few typical social networking/sharing buttons.
My hope is that this will help grow the community a bit and spread the good HHR gospel to new reaches of the Intertubes.
You'll also note that when a story's share icons are used, the link that is shared is the link to the original story + the HHR bar. Previously, sharing a link on Twitter or Facebook linked directly to the HHR submission's page, which while it was never complained about, always bugged me.
Basically, if I want to share a story with my friends and followers, I want to share the story, not the HHR link. That said, as admin for HHR, I also want to promote and grow the site, and so I wasn't sure how best to handle this. The HHR bar solves this elegantly. Actual story gets shared, HHR is still promoted as the source, win-win.
I've tested it in the latest versions of FF/Chrome/Safari/IE and on PC/Mac, with no troubles; However, as always, please let me know if you notice any troubles with the bar.
A note to non-VPN using peeps in China -- the right-side of the bar might act a bit wonky, as it loads the Facebook Like/Twitter Follow buttons, and they'll not load without a VPN on due to FB and Twitter being blocked.
And finally, if you have any recommendations for improvements to the bar, leave a note.
