Opinion: Old story promotion?

I'm opening this up to the HHR community to see what everyone's opinion is on it.

Currently HHR allows voting on stories as old as one year, which allows old submissions to make their way to the front page well past their prime.

Should this 1-year value be changed to something like, 1 month to prevent older posts from appearing on the front page of the site?

Could you maybe work it to where stories filed under "News" or some other current event-type would be a month, but others filed as a "China Pic" or "Humor" have a longer option. How would that work out?

Ryan,

30 to 90 days sounds good to me.

This site has grown significantly in the past couple of months, with a huge increase in submissions, and I have a difficult time just following stories of more than a week. (could be just my old age) In fact, dupes are making it past members, who, in the past would have pounced on them like a frog on a June bug.

Many, many, good stories get buried after getting three or four up votes and never make it to the FP, in part, I believe due to the success - shear volume of posts - to the site.

Ah, the headaches that come with success...

I like the 1 year as sometimes we find a great story in the related story section and it helps one of those great stories that someone missed with 4 votes make it to the front page. It is rare that a story a year old is moved up, but almost always a good one worth of being on the front page.

True.

I often re-post old articles many years old (from other sites). Some are timeless.

I'm sure you're right, but I think there's still too much possibility for abuse.

What if after 30, 60, or 90 days, instead of an option to vote, there was an option to post it back onto the "Upcoming" page. It retains its current vote count, but the person who reposts it can't make the final vote. This way it takes two people to take a post out of retirement but avoids the possibility of a front page massacre like the one I remember happening about a year and a half ago.

Yes, that "massacre" has proven to be the exception, rather than the rule, so that is why i think a year is good. With 5 votes now being required, and likely 6 votes in the future, for front page promotion, it makes such a thing less likely as to when only 3 or 4 votes were required to make it to the front page.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I'm going to keep thinking on it and see if I can't come up with a good 'middle way' solution.

I've got some new ideas for the front page to allow for a bit better organization, so this might fall in line with that.
