The next question could be, why is Human Flesh Search a purely Chinese phenomenon?

Certainly more prevalent here than anywhere else (to my limited knowledge), but is it really purely a Chinese phenomenon? I've definitely seen similar hunts on English-language forums (and newsgroups) going back 10-15 years. They're not usually as fast or as rabid, but that could be due to both population and a larger degree of resentment and anger among the general population. Curious though.

In one sense I think this is great, it's the power of the people and can help nail govt officials/cops to a cross if need be. But then there's the flip side where its just mob mentality going on a witch hunt. A case being of a Chinese who had her photo taken from behind showing her legs. She had very long legs and so Chinese netizens decided to find out who she is. They found her and plastered her face all over the net - that experience couldn't have been pleasant for the girl.
